About CinemaEngineer - VFX & CGI Insights

Engineering Reality | Where Art Meets Technology

CinemaEngineer is an independent VFX and CGI platform focused on visual effects, computer-generated imagery, compositing, simulation, animation, and the technology behind modern cinematic production.

It brings together practical VFX knowledge, technical experimentation, visual analysis, tutorials, and original projects with a simple idea at its core:

Cinema is where art and technology meet.

The name CinemaEngineer reflects this approach — not as a traditional engineering discipline, but as a way of thinking about visual storytelling through both creativity and technology.

Our Focus

CinemaEngineer focuses on the creative and technical side of digital visual effects and cinematic production.

Our main areas of interest include:

  • Visual Effects (VFX)
  • Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI)
  • Digital Compositing
  • 3D Simulation and FX
  • Motion Graphics
  • 2D Animation
  • Cinematic Design
  • Rendering and Look Development
  • Digital Post-Production
  • VFX and CGI Technology
  • Technical Education and Research

The goal is not simply to use software, but to understand the techniques, processes, and visual principles behind the tools.

A Journey in VFX and CGI

The journey behind CinemaEngineer began in 2009, following years of personal exploration and professional development in visual effects and digital production.

Before CinemaEngineer, the CinemaVFX.net project was active between 2013 and 2017, providing VFX and CGI-related content and educational material.

These projects form part of a longer journey focused on learning, experimenting with visual-effects technologies, and sharing practical knowledge with others interested in the field.

CinemaEngineer continues that journey with a broader focus on VFX, CGI, cinema, technology, education, and original visual projects.

About the Creator

CinemaEngineer was created by Sadjad Jahangiri, a VFX and CGI artist and educator whose work and studies in digital visual effects began in 2009.

Over the years, his work has involved exploring different areas of visual production, including compositing, simulation, CGI, shot design, animation, motion graphics, and digital image-making.

A significant part of this journey has also involved learning, teaching, and experimenting with VFX and CGI software and workflows.

CinemaEngineer is the result of that long-term interest: a place to document knowledge, investigate new technologies, analyze visual effects, and develop original ideas and projects.

What We Do

CinemaEngineer explores visual effects from both creative and technical perspectives.

This includes studying and creating:

Visual Effects

Digital effects designed to enhance, transform, or create visual elements that would be difficult, impossible, or impractical to capture directly in-camera.

CGI

Computer-generated imagery used for cinematic visuals, environments, objects, characters, effects, and other digital elements.

Compositing

The integration of live-action footage, CGI, simulations, effects, mattes, and other visual elements into a coherent final image.

Simulation and FX

Procedural and physically inspired simulations such as smoke, fire, destruction, fluids, particles, and other dynamic effects.

Shot Design

The planning and development of individual visual-effects shots, from concept and construction through rendering and compositing.

Animation and Motion Graphics

Exploration of 2D animation, motion design, and other forms of digital visual communication that complement cinematic production.

A Technical Approach to Visual Effects

At CinemaEngineer, visual effects are not treated as software tricks.

Software is only a tool.

The real focus is on understanding why an image works — how lighting, color, motion, composition, perspective, materials, simulation, camera behavior, and compositing interact to create a believable result.

That is why CinemaEngineer combines artistic thinking with technical investigation.

The objective is to understand the process behind the image rather than simply reproduce a particular effect.

Projects, Experiments and Research

Not everything created at CinemaEngineer is a commercial production.

Some projects are personal studies, experiments, visual analyses, technical tests, and research-driven explorations.

These projects provide an opportunity to investigate new workflows, compare techniques, study cinematic effects, and explore different approaches to VFX and CGI.

Where appropriate, projects are identified clearly as personal projects, studies, experiments, or commissioned work, so their nature and context remain transparent.

Articles and Education

CinemaEngineer also publishes articles and educational material covering VFX, CGI, rendering, compositing, simulation, animation, and related cinematic technologies.

Topics may include software and workflows involving tools such as Houdini, Nuke, Redshift, Arnold, V-Ray, RenderMan, DaVinci Resolve, After Effects, and other applications used in modern digital production.

The purpose of these articles is not simply to provide software instructions.

They aim to explain the ideas and techniques behind the workflow and to help artists understand how different technologies can be applied to real visual-effects problems.

Who CinemaEngineer Is For

CinemaEngineer is intended for people interested in the technical and artistic side of visual production, including:

  • VFX artists
  • CGI artists
  • Compositors
  • 3D artists
  • Motion designers
  • Animators
  • Filmmakers
  • Students and beginners
  • Experienced artists exploring new techniques
  • Anyone interested in how cinematic visual effects are created

Whether you are taking your first steps into VFX or investigating advanced production techniques, CinemaEngineer is designed as a place to learn, experiment, and explore.

Independent by Design

CinemaEngineer is independently created and developed.

This independence allows the platform to explore subjects based on genuine interest rather than being limited to a particular software vendor, production company, or commercial agenda.

It also allows room for experimentation — including projects that may be too unusual, technical, or exploratory for a conventional production environment.

The objective is simple:

Explore. Create. Understand. Share.

What Makes CinemaEngineer Different

CinemaEngineer sits at the intersection of VFX, CGI, cinema, art, and technology.

It is not only about creating an impressive image.

It is about understanding the process and logic behind that image.

How does a simulation behave?

Why does a composite feel realistic?

How does lighting affect a digital object?

Why does one render feel cinematic while another feels artificial?

How can technology serve visual storytelling instead of becoming the focus itself?

These are the kinds of questions that drive the work and research at CinemaEngineer.

The Philosophy

Visual effects are ultimately about creating images that serve a story.

Technology provides the tools.

Art provides the direction.

Engineering, in this context, provides an understanding of how everything works together.

CinemaEngineer brings these perspectives together to explore the craft and technology behind cinematic imagery.
