Maxon has released Redshift 2026.8, the latest feature-focused update to its GPU-accelerated renderer, bringing new procedural shading capabilities and improvements for creating atmospheric environments and surface detail.
Released on July 22, 2026, Redshift 2026.8 introduces a new Scratches shader node, giving artists a more direct procedural approach to generating surface wear and fine scratch patterns. The addition is particularly useful for materials that need subtle imperfections, abrasion, or repeated surface detail without relying entirely on painted textures.
New Scratches Shader
One of the most notable additions in this release is the new Scratches shader. The node is designed to generate procedural scratch patterns that can be incorporated into material networks, making it easier to build worn and weathered surfaces.
For VFX and look-development workflows, this can be useful for adding small-scale imperfections to materials such as painted metal, plastics, glass, and other surfaces where perfectly clean textures can make CG assets look artificial.
High-Altitude Clouds
Redshift 2026.8 also expands its procedural cloud capabilities with support for rendering a high-altitude cloud layer.
The update builds on Redshift's procedural cloud system and provides another way to create atmospheric elements directly within the renderer. This can be particularly useful for large-scale environments, skies, aerial shots, and scenes that require additional depth between the foreground and background.
The release also adds support for rendering procedural clouds with the new high-altitude layer, giving artists more control over how cloud formations are incorporated into an environment.
Additional Improvements
Beyond the headline features, Redshift 2026.8 includes a range of fixes and workflow improvements across supported applications. The update addresses issues involving volumes, UV projection, large textures, Bokeh configuration, and other rendering-related problems.
Redshift 2026.8 also improves compatibility across its supported DCC integrations. For Cinema 4D, the release supports Cinema 4D 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026.3 or later.
Redshift 2026.8.1
Maxon subsequently released Redshift 2026.8.1 on August 12, 2026. Rather than introducing another major set of rendering features, this follow-up update focuses mainly on fixes and compatibility improvements.
Among other changes, Redshift 2026.8.1 adds support for Houdini 21.0.792 and Solaris 21.0.792, while fixing a regression that could cause visual artifacts in Redshift Live post effects.
This makes 2026.8.1 the current maintenance update, while the feature additions discussed in this article were introduced with Redshift 2026.8.
A Practical Update for Look Development and VFX
Redshift 2026.8 is not a complete overhaul of the renderer, but its new procedural tools target two areas that are particularly important in production: surface detail and atmospheric environments.
The Scratches shader can help artists build more believable material variation, while the high-altitude cloud support expands the renderer's capabilities for environmental and atmospheric shots. Combined with the ongoing compatibility and stability improvements, the update represents a practical step forward for Redshift-based rendering workflows.
